What to consider when buying - add your own tips below

Here are our top tips on things to consider when buying. You’re welcome to add your recommendations and comments below. Discuss prospective buys on our message boards, too.

Chassis. The newest are nearly half a century old. There is going to be rust, the question is how much.

Steering. With so many links, it is going to be a lot vaguer than a modern car. Over three inches of movement on the wheel is considered excessive.

Bodywork corrosion. Aluminium doesn’t rust like steel, but it still corrodes.

Swivel housings. Pitted housings lose oil and will cause an MoT failure.

Springs. They should work and not be a solid block of rust.

Exhaust smoke. MoT will be limited to a visual smoke test, but there still shouldn’t be too much.

Electrics. A very simple system, but one that may have been bodged over the decades.

Oil leaks. All old Land Rovers leak oil, but they don’t have to. Look at the ground where the Land Rover is usually parked to get an idea where the main leaks are.

Straight lines. It’s easy to see if the chassis or body is twisted by looking along the galvanised capping.

Transmission. Should be quiet and easy shifting, not noisy and difficult. The louder/more difficult, the more worn.
