Chassis and rear crossmember corrosion. Also look for dodgy outriggers and spring-mounting points

Rusted chassis dumb irons. Found at the front extremities of the chassis

Bulkhead corrosion, especially around the door hinges and the top corner under the windscreen

Rusty footwells

Pitted swivel housings. Costly to replace

Window channels. Felt gets soggy and causes rust

Leaky gearbox. ‘They all do it mate...’ Well, a small seep might not be too serious, apart from the mess on your drive, but look for oil leaking from transfer box into the transmission brake (handbrake)

Springs can get tired and cause the vehicle to sag down at the back, or to one side

Upholstery – look for rips or splits in the commonly fitted vinyl seats, and the dash top
Oil smoke from the exhaust means an overhaul is due
