Like a hippo to water
Andy Doughty is a self-confessed Freelander addict; and he isn’t scared to use it in the mud, either
The bug bit hard when I saw Hippo at the front of my local Land Rover dealership. At the time I was driving a V6 Vauxhall Vectra but, as soon as I saw the Freelander, I had to have a test-drive. That was it – I was smitten.
Hippo is a 1.8-litre petrol, Anniversary-edition three-door finished in Blenheim Silver.
Despite this engine’s reputation, I think it’s great. It’s covered only 53,000 miles in 10 years, and the only real upgrades have been an Alpine head unit, JBL speakers and a 1000-watt subwoofer. I like to keep it shiny in the main but sometimes I do go out of my way to get it dirty; my kids love off-roading and even my wife wears our Freelander Club T-shirt.
I suppose I’m like most other Land Rover owners – there’s something about opening the blinds every morning and seeing it sat there:
I just want to go and drive it.
Last year we went on the fantastic 60th Anniversary run to Gaydon, and we’re always with Hippo on the Freelander Club stand at the shows.
If you see us, come and say hello.
