TD5 Fuel consumption

Ok... so we're getting about 23mpg..

Not driving it particularly hard.. no modifications that would impede aerodynamics (not that Defenders have many aerodynamic properties ) ..

so..

Any ideas to improve fuel consumption, already cleaned air filter...

Where do you buy fuel?
My TD5 Discovery gets 24mpg on Tesco fuel and 28mpg on fuel from the Shell garage up the road. Everytime, its not a one off.

My 130 gets around 340-360 to a tank on long runs,
and around 280 per tank on short journeys and around town.

Mines an 03 TD5

Regular servicing and no mods, running on muds.

Same as MG Mal....about 330 till the light comes on......works out at about 29/30mpg

drops to about 27 if I do a bit of laning or work it hard.

On (Worn) 235/85/R16's, EGR removed, Steering guard and snorkel fitted.

23mpg doesn't sound good.

Maybe some injector cleaner, check tyre pressures and a clean of the MAF Sensor? Careful not to dmage the MAF sensor if you go down that route.

If you carry heavy loads that might affect it?

2003 TD5 90 Van

I've only emptied a few tanks so far in the new toy, but I had 385 miles out of a tank on a run (Dover to Aberdeen!) and had 330 miles in town driving only (plus me seeing how fast it will reach the speed limit - well it's a new toy!).

So that equates to 25.7mpg on a 70mph run up the country and a lowly 22.1mpg with (hard) town driving - based on brimming the tank (not assumed tank volumes). I'm gonna work on doing better in town!

changill, it's worth noting the 90 has a smaller tank to the 110's and 130's. 90 is around 11 gallon, I think 110 etc are 15 gallon tanks (I think). ~50L vs ~80L.

Only mods to my truck is a K&N filter fitted by previous owner. It's also freshly serviced.

I had hoped for higher figures, but I think I'm still driving it pretty hard, until the new-ness wears off....

On my TD5 90 I get on average 27mpg when driven fairly carefully on mostly town routes... This is with:

265 A/T Tyres inc spare (that weigh a ton)
Steering + Other Guards
Winch + Bumper (that weigh a ton)
Storage Box with various gear in (ropes, boots etc.)
Twin Batteries

70mph motorway runs seem to make the consumption slightly worse, and towing a caravan drops it down to roughly 21mpg.

I don't usually run the tank past 330 miles before filling up... and occasionally put a shot of Millers Power Sport Diesel treatment through

Just a tip anything above 60mph (empty) makes a big difference of fuel economy. My 110 does about 28mpg providing i keep to 60mph ish goes down to roughly 23-25ish if i regulary hit 70mph between villages etc and the same when im towing. Punting the throttle makes a big difference too as most people tend to do this as the td5 has the deadspot when pulling away.

My old 2003 td5 90 only used to get 23mpg and that was unmodified, all clean filters and oil. However, the 1999 td5 Heritage 90 I had before that used to get 26 around town and 32 on a run, I'm not sure if the Heritage had been chipped and it was never confirmed......

That doesn't sound great. In the 12K miles/2 years I've owned my Y2K 90 TD5 CSW it has averaged 28.34mpg up to the last fill. I had Disco transfer gears installed last year and prior to that the range was 24 to 29 and about 1 to 1.5mpg better since. (One reason I keep records is to see what effect mods have and check what is wrong if it suddenly increases.)

I've heard that some TD5s are better than others on the fuel so maybe you have a thirsty one. My driving includes about 50% motorways and on those I generally go 75 - 80mph (indicated which is about 4mph over) which increases but doesn't murder the consumption. If you've checked the obvious things (tyre inflation, binding brakes, roofrack) and maintenance is up to date and performance OK then there may not be much more you can do.

alright guys an gals,dont mean to sound flash but i can get 33.9 mpg outta my beast IF i drive sensibly !!
if i dont drive sensibly i dont look at the mpg hey coz its money for fun.

i've got a k&n air filter and recently replaced MAF sensor,i reguarly service her and injector cleaner twice about twice a year,she's done about 140,000 so i'm well chuffed with her.its possible to have both sides of the coin i reckon.
