The FREELANDER 2 TD4_e Stop/Start

Posted: 8:11am, 6 October 2008

Having an engine that cuts out at the lights is nothing new for Land Rover drivers, this time, though, its deliberate. The Freelander stop/start is revealed

For a vehicle that is being so widely trumpeted the actual figures may not look that impressive themselves. But it does put the marque on the correct path and is more than just a nod to the greens.

Stop/Start is automatically activated each time the ignition is turned on, although there is a switch on the fascia to disable the system if required.

For the engine to shut down, the vehicle must be stationary, the gearbox in neutral and the clutch pedal raised. To re-start, the driver simply depresses the clutch and the enhanced starter motor engages the engine, ready for when first gear is selected.

Fuel consumption improved by 3.8 mpg and CO2 emissions reduced by 8% over the standard EU4 drive cycle

The new Freelander 2 TD4_e is Land Rover's most fuel-efficient vehicle to date. CO2 emissions are reduced by 8 per cent from 194 g/km to 179 g/km. Land Rover engineers have also measured fuel savings approaching 20 per cent in heavy urban traffic with a cobined consumption improved from 37.7 mpg to 41.3 mpg.

Improvements have been made in other areas including the starter motor and battery to cope with more frequent starts and higher discharge. The Ring Gear has also been modified and is made from a much harder steel with 25% higher carbon content to cope with increased use (the ring gear comes into direct contact with the starter motor when starting)

More details will be published in LRO soon.
