Northern & Clubman Challenge Series

Posted: 2:31pm, 28 May 2009

Matlock in Derbyshire was a great location for The Northern Challenge and the Clubman Challenge’s first event

The 40 punches were set out on two tiers of this steep rocky wooded site. As I was enlisted to help set out the course, I can testify to the severity of the hill, well my legs will, it all looked quite tranquil at eight am, the sun breaking through the trees on to a carpet of bluebells and wild garlic. On the top tier there were some difficult punches with large rocks and dense woodland. The lower level consisted of some easy looking ground until you broke the crust and opened up a deep bog. The punches set out in an anti clockwise direction could be attempted in any order to get the maximum points in the allotted time.

Saturday saw the two car teams on the hill, although it was not a large turn out, there was some quality winching performed to reach the punches. Gavin Robinson and David Billing were the first to come to grief after a winch rope broke, Gavin being the DERV DOCTOR, soon administered surgery and fitted a replacement and was soon back on the hill. Then team mates Danny Riley and Earl Yeoman’s front diff went, after major surgery and a brew, they were all back out plugging away with big grins returning after overcoming some challenging punches. The team coming second with 2700 points

Sunday dawned after a chilly night’s camping, the close proximity to the river didn’t help. The kettle on and a quick breakfast as the clubman competitors started rolling into the site. The morning’s scrutineering over and the two car teams were timed out to start another gruelling day. The Sharp brothers along with Simon Essam and son Henry in their TD5 truck cab, were minus their front winch after it packing up late on Saturday. It was stripped down overnight but unfortunately unable to be repaired adding to another challenge for the team, still managing a win with 3750 points.

A few new motors turned out for the Clubman Challenge. Father and son Barrie and Adam Gee in their Range Rover suffered overheating, and then struggling with only a front winch executed a one hundred and eighty degree turn in the bog and hauled themselves out. Their next punch still in the bog saw them snap a winch rope so it was an early bacon roll and a splicing session. Ending the day in fourth place with 1299 points.

New comers Mark Grainger with co driver Jeremy Burgess in the Toynes’ ex ninety, made a promising start till electrical gremlins had them working frantically to finish a punch, then managing to snatch a couple of quick ones fifteen minutes before the end, to finish fifth on 1200.

Jim Yates and Alan Kemp suffered a broken steering arm on the first punch then the compressor gave trouble for the rest of the day. But this did not stop them executing some delicate manoeuvres with the top and front winch to overcome some large rocks, to come joint second on 2600 points with the immaculate Ibex of James Bubb and Simon Hodges, this pair went home without a trace of damage on their vehicle after a day quietly working away.

Last but no means least ”well first actually on 3300 points”, the larger than life Chris Booth and co driver for the day John Sales, Chris had a good workout, with a slipping belt leaving him short on power steering.

After a sunny, enjoyable weekend on a challenging site the competitors made their way home to make minor repairs for the next round. The club look forward to the teams unable to compete in this round due to vehicle problems or other commitments attending the next event.
