Atlantic Rising, a small dedicated charity concerned with the impact of rising sea levels around the Atlantic coastline, has won the 2009 Royal Geographical Society ‘Go Beyond’ bursary, provided b A £10,000 grant will help the team’s 10-month journey over 22,000 miles and 31 countries, following the 1.5-metre contour line around the Atlantic rim to look at what might be lost under rising sea levels. The bursary also includes the loan of a 110 Defender. ‘Land Rover has lent us an amazing vehicle and kitted it out for us. It has a winch, four spare wheels, eight jerry cans and essential spares. It has a really good roof rack that we’re going to put a roof tent on. We couldn’t make this trip without this vehicle,’ says team member Lynn Morris. Atlantic Rising hopes to build links between English-speaking schools around the Atlantic rim, giving students the opportunity to share their experiences and lessons and set up a network through rafi.ki, an online learning community for schools. It’ll also allow teachers to collaborate on teaching resources based on the research supplied by Atlantic Rising. Land Rover has worked with the RGS for more than two decades. In 2007, it provided a fully carbon-offset Freelander 2 for the society’s work in schools and colleges. The application deadline for the next award is September 25.
