My early 86-inch has had a Series II steering box fitted at some point. This has taken away the dipswitch, which was on the middle of the steering wheel.
It now has a switch screwed on the front edge of the bulkhead. This is fine for getting it through the MoT but not convenient to reach quickly; and I would rather have a floor-mounted switch, anyway. I have all the wiring but no switch as yet.
What would be the correct one to fit? My local parts place says it’s the same as a Mini. The floor switch isn’t shown in my Series I parts catalogue. Can you help?

If your parts catalogue includes 88/109 models, the floor dipswitch is included. It’s on the steering column page, not the electrical pages – not very logical, but that’s because the initial 86-inch Series Is had the dipswitch and horn-push on the steering wheel centre. The Rover part number is 232026, which should be all the information you need to get you one from any of the Series parts specialists. The Lucas reference is 31372A, though you shouldn’t need this number.
There are several fixing-down holes, but you only need use two at diagonal positions – this unit was fitted to a wide variety of vehicles. You’ll have to cut a hole in the floor, of course.
Personally, I don’t like any of the Series I dipswitches. The early wheel-centre switch can get caught in your sleeve as you turn the wheel, and the floor version always seems to need a stamp in the middle of changing gear – not enough feet. As your vehicle isn’t standard, anyway, why not just locate the current switch more conveniently? Peter Galilee
