When I’m travelling at 45-55mph I get a vibration through the steering wheel. I had the wheels rebalanced and the front suspension bushes. The wheels are LT 265/75 R16 with spacers on. What’s wrong? Len Baker, York
Your big wheels and spacers will make this worse but, as you’ve done the wheel balancing, it’s probably the kingpin preload that needs sorting. Your workshop manual deals with this in great detail, but here are the key points.
Start by jacking the vehicle up, support it on axle stands and remove the front wheels. Disconnect the track rods and draglink. Check the force needed to turn each swivel hub. Hook a spring balance into the hole the track rod end was in and measure the pull needed to turn the hub. It should be 8-10 lb (3.5-4.5kg) when it’s turning.
Remove the shims from the top pin until this is correct. Do the same when building up new swivel housings.
