The clutch on my 1994 Discovery 200Tdi rattles, but the noise stops when I press the pedal. What do you think it is and how do I fix it?
Nick Yates, Liverpool
The rattle is coming from your clutch release bearing and the only cure is to replace it. You’ll need to remove the gearbox to do this, so break out your workshop manual and decide if it’s a job you feel happy tackling at home.
While the gearbox is out you should also replace the clutch and clutch fork, and look for wear on the sleeve that the clutch-release bearing slides on. Replace this sleeve too if any wear is visible.
