This LRO reader emailed LRO.email@example.com to ask our experts for their opinion on a Daihatsu engine conversion in his 1978 Land Rover Series III.
For a long time, I’ve been thinking of treating my 1978 Series III to a Daihatsu conversion. However I recently saw your article where Sam Watson mentioned he had got rid of ‘the awful’ Daihatsu engine. Eek! I was under the impression this was a nice conversion to have – what’s your opinion?

The 2.8 turbo Daihatsu was quite a good conversion into an early Ninety – a lot better than the 2.5 TD. However, now that you can have a 200Tdi or 300Tdi, why would you want anything else? But if you already have a Daihatsu and it’s a good one, it’ll do a fine job.
If you go Tdi everything is Land Rover – both parts and servicing – so it may be simpler all round.
