My Discovery 2 is suffering an ongoing electrical problem that sometimes results in the rev counter and speedometer going down, the fuel and temperature gauges coming on and the indicators not working. My local 4x4 mechanic has tried various things, but we’re still left scratching our heads.

You have an earthing fault in the area of the dash and instruments. If you can locate and clean any earthing points, you may cure the problem – but access is difficult and the problem intermittent, so testing may be impossible unless you can get the fault to occur while you’re testing.
What I would recommend is that you take three two-feet lengths of wire and gain sufficient access to the dash wiring to locate three black cables (earth cables) running to different parts of the dash. Attach your three cables and take the other end to a good earth. This will give you a very good chance of curing the problem without major stripdown.
