I have a 1996 Discovery 300Tdi. When I turn right there is a loud clunking sound coming from the front left wheel. I have jacked it up today and there is play on the wheel from top to bottom (12 to 6). The play is only little but am I right in believing this is the swivel bearing?
Can this little bit of play be enough to cause the clunking noise?

The small amount of play will not be causing the clunking noise but it does need sorting out because it has a big effect on steering stability and, depending on how much play there is, can be an MoT fail. The clunking is most likely to be the CV joint and this will also need changing as soon as possible before it fails completely and leaves you stranded.
