My Defender 90 is fitted with a Range Rover 3.5 V8 engine. The four-speed gearbox is noisy and I would like to upgrade to a five-speed box. What gearbox can I fit and from which vehicle?

There are several ways to achieve your conversion. The two simplest ones are:
1. Fit a five-speed gearbox from a 110/90 V8
2. Fit a five-speed gearbox from a 110/90 diesel.
This will give you a choice of LT77 or LT380 gearbox. This option will obviously give you a wider choice of secondhand boxes, but you’ll need a V8 four-cylinder conversion ring to make your V8 fit. Both of these conversions will need mountings, propshafts, clutch and slave cylinders etc. Either of these conversions will allow you to use the LT230 transfer box ratio.
