This LRO reader emailed LRO.email@example.com looking for pointers on improving engine performance for towing fully laden trailers with his Defender 200Tdi.
I tow a fully laden 12ft x 6ft twin-axle trailer for a large proportion of the mileage that I do in my 1992 Defender 200Tdi, which has 150,000 miles on the clock.
Can I improve engine performance in any way? The vehicle isn't already modified. I was thinking of replacing the exhaust system, as well as fitting a performance air filter and a larger intercooler.

The first thing I would fit is a larger intercooler. This will probably give all the extra performance you want, but won't increase power and torque to the level that will affect reliability on a engine with 150,000 miles on it.
200Tdi performance and economy can also be perked up with a gas-flowed cylinder head.
