This LRO reader emailed LRO.firstname.lastname@example.org looking for advice on transplanting an LT230 transfer box into a One Ten V8.
Are LT230 transfer boxes inter-changeable? In other words, do they all use the same casing regardless of the main box they’re attached to and the vehicle they’re mounted in?
I need a replacement LT230 to go on the back of my five-speed LT85 Santana and there’s a lack of Defenders here in New Zealand to donate parts: no salt on the roads and lots of skilled mechanics mean they’re all still running! However, there are plenty of old Discovery 1s and D2s near the end of their useful lives – can I lift a box from one of these?

Within reason, the LT230 transfer boxes are fairly interchangeable. There are a few issues to watch out for, though. You’ll have to use your handbrake assembly, but this is a simple bolt-on change. You’ll also have to use your existing lever assemblies but, again, this is just a case of swapping them over.
Make sure you get abox with the worm drive speedo housing and change the gear from your existing box so that the speedo will read to suit the 110 tyre size.
Finally, you must make sure the transfer box has a diff lock attached – some models of Discovery 2s didn’t have this.
