This LRO reader emailed LRO.email@example.com seeking advice on an engine swap for his 2.5 N/A Defender.
I’ve bought an ex-MOD 90 soft top with a gutless 2.5 N/A engine. Can you advise of a simple transplant? And how much to have one fitted?

That engine should be able to cruise at 55-60mph. There’s no soundproofing on a military 90, so some underbonnet padding and cab-floor acoustic matting will make a big difference. A 200 or 300Tdi from a Disco will give a substantial power boost - from 65bhp to 110bhp - and more MPG. It will fit your gearbox.
Costs? Engine radiator and intercooler, about £500. Fitted, £1200-£1500. Consider fitting power steering at the same time: this will make the steering lighter and easier to use.
