This LRO reader emailed LRO.firstname.lastname@example.org seeking help with burnt Discovery 3 plastic intakes.
While driving to our holiday destination in the Netherlands, my Disco 3 started belching black smoke. We limped into a Land Rover dealership and they diagnosed a split turbo pressure hose.
When they replaced that, they found that the plenum chamber and both inlet manifolds had holes burnt into the plastic from inside out. It looked like worms of molten plastic forced out of the housings.
Have you ever come across this problem? What might be the root cause? And how can I prevent it from happening again?

I would suggest having the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves inspected: if these are leaking back they may be igniting the carbon and oil deposits in the manifolds.
