This LRO reader emailed LRO.firstname.lastname@example.org wondering whether tall tyres might damage his drivetrain
I bought a Freelander 1 so I could join my local Land Rover club in quarries, lanes etc. The vehicle has proved a bit low for this, so I’m planning a 50mm lift and higher-walled tyres. At present it has 15-inch wheels with 205/65 R15 tyres. I’d like to fit 215/80 R15 tyres instead, but I’ve heard this could damage the drivetrain. What’s your advice?
Hill Reid, Larne, County Antrim.
215/80 R15 tyres will fit fine. If all four are the same size, I can’t see them causing any drivetrain problems. To give you an idea of the difference between the sizes, your 205/65 R15s are 25.8 inches in diameter, the factory fit 195/80 R15s are 27.7 inches, and the 215/80 R15s are 29 inches.
The drivetrain is a known weak point so only fit taller tyres if you know everything is in good order.
