This LRO reader emailed LRO.firstname.lastname@example.org to ask our experts if it is possible to exchange a Rover V8 for a Toyota V6 in his Defender 90.
Is it possible to replace the 3.5 V8 in my Defender 90 with a Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 V6? If so, would it be a safe and reliable conversion?

Toyota does make good engines, and this one is used in the company’s 4Runners and T100 trucks in the US, so it should be suitable for 4x4 vehicles. The only drawback I can foresee is that its maximum torque comes in at 3600rpm, which means you would have to rev it very high to get the best power. Your Rover
V8 achieves its maximum torque at about 1600rpm, which means it can pull at not much more than tick over. I don’t know of anyone making a conversion kit, so you may have to make your own.
