This LRO reader emailed LRO.email@example.com to ask Steve Jones for advice on how to solve a rev counter gone mad.
The rev counter on my Discovery 300Tdi auto has started to go mad: all of a sudden it flies about all over the place, then settles down for a little time before doing it all over again. So far as I can figure, it seems to happen randomly. Will the rev counter need replacing or can it be fixed?

The most probable cause is the connection on the back of the alternator. It’s the one with a capacitor attached and is marked AL. These often break or short, so check that out.
