The club’s origins going back to 1954 when a dozen Land Rover enthusiasts with the support of the Rover Company created the ‘Land Rover Owners Club’. In 1965 the club split into a number of regional centres including the Midlands, under the banner of the Rover Owners’ Association, which has evolved over the decades into the current Association of Land Rover Clubs (ALRC).
The club supports a broad and very full calendar of competitive, social, and green laning events with several activities each month. Central to the club’s competitive events are the ALRC National Rally, which the club hosted at Eastnor Castle in 2008 and the ‘Major’s Memorial Trophy’ a gruelling two day cross-country vehicle trial (CCVT) originally founded by Eastnor Castle’s late and very charismatic owner Major Ben Hervey Bathurst, MROC’s club president at the time.
‘The Major’s’ as the event was originally known was first run in 1969 as a result of comments overheard by Major Bathurst whilst presenting the prizes at the National Rally at Eastnor. The ground had been rather dry and "the trial was too easy and not challenging enough for the best drivers".
The Major continued with the prize giving and then issued a challenge to all clubs to bring their best drivers and return in October to see if the ground was still too easy. He laid the first trial out himself, setting a testing course across varying ground. The aim was for the Major to pit himself and his driving experience against the cream of Britain's Land Rover drivers, having driven all the sections himself. The event has evolved over the years and after the Major’s death in 1997 was renamed the ‘Majors Memorial’ in his honour and continues with the support of the Bathurst family.
The current event consists of 10 demanding trials sections on each of the two days. Participating clubs field multiple teams, each with three drivers. The winning team with the lowest combined score for the three drivers is presented with the coveted ‘Rose Bowl’ trophy.
The club also has a number of camping and caravanning rallies throughout the year, and a 4x4 response group working in association with the Solihull Metropolitan Borough and Coventry City Councils, under the banner of the ‘West Midland Emergency 4x4 Support Group’. (WME4x4SG)
