You are one of the oldest Land Rover Clubs, how has it evolved?
Back in our heyday, in the early 1990s, there were well over 600 members and we ran all disciplines from Green Laning to Comp. Safari with everything in between. Following the creation of Northern Off Road Club and the subsequent migration of the Comp contingent in the late 90s, the club suffered a steady decline until around 2008, when it underwent something of a renaissance.
We now have around 100 members, and climbing steadily. We run around fifteen CCV or RTV trials events each year, several of which are multi-day camping and social events (that's posh code for an excuse to drink beer!).
Your trials have a reputation for being tough?
We make it pretty clear that our trials are not for the faint-hearted, particularly the CCVs, where vehicle damage is accepted as a perfectly normal occupational hazard. Roll-overs are by no means an uncommon occurrence. Indeed, it’s a mark of the sort of people you can expect to find at our events that when a motor does roll over, the initial instinct is to cheer, rather than to run and help (although we do get there in the end). We even award Roll-Over stickers to such lucky members and these are worn as badges of honour on the doors of their vehicles (generally upside down!).
So, your members are tough competitors?
There are a few competitive feuds that have gone on for decades. We have some notable characters, and everyone has a nick-name awarded by the club, whether they like it or not such as; Mark ‘il Championi’ Barnes , Barry ‘Dr. Evil’ Alderson, Tony ‘Man-Duck’ Dearnley Phil ‘Mr Nice’ Rigg and James ‘Farm Boy’ Middleton.
How can readers who are tough enough get involved?
You can follow our exploits online at penninelandrover.co.uk. Our newsletter, ‘Bottom Box’, is published online on the website every month and is well worth a read, along with a whole raft of photos of motors from events and the occasional video (usually if someone gets caught rolling over on camera).
