How did the club get started?
In 2003, Paulo Rocha decided to build a replica of a Defender 110 from the 1998 Camel Trophy Tierra del Fuego event. During his research he got to know fellow CT enthusiasts; Carlos Soares, Bruno Prior and Fidalgo e Sousa, who was also building a replica. By 2006 the group had 3 vehicles and started to regularly attend LR shows in Portugal and the Camel Trophy Portugal group was born.
How has the club developed?
Every year there is an increase in the number of vehicles and members, including vehicles that actually took part in Camel Trophy events. In 2007 we set up a web site (www.CamelTrophyPortugal.com) and then a Facebook group that played an important role in the group's evolution.
Is the CT popular in Portugal?
We only had four teams in events: 1983 - Zaire (Pedro Vilas-Boas + Manuel Marques Pinto), 1997 - Mongolia (António Ruas + Miguel Repas), 1998 - Tierra del Fuego (Gonçalo Pinheiro + Pedro Maia) and 2000 - Tonga/Samoa (João Martins + Nuno Filipe). However, despite this low participation there was a lot of public interest, with many people going to national selections. This interest carries on today among Land Rover enthusiasts throughout the country.
What ambitions do you have for the club?
Portugal received Discovery Camel Trophy limited editions; watches, clothes, footwear and bags. Besides being present at events and shows, one of the group's goals is to gather these items. They all tell something about the Camel Trophy story. Throughout our eight years we've already collected some interesting stuff, but there is lot more out there to be discovered.
