The Bowler Defender crews are among more than 140 teams tackling 45 competitive miles over eight rally stages on Saturday, starting in Llandudno. The Cambrian Rally replaces the Rallye Sunseeker/Rallye Dorset, which was cancelled following changes to the British Rally Championship for 2015 and beyond.
Scrutineering is at the Victoria Centre in the North Wales town on Friday. The rally route then takes in forest tracks around Penmachno and Betws-y-Coed, before tackling the tarmac roads on the Great Orme headland – they’ll be the first tarmac rally miles for the Kumho-shod Defenders.
At the top of the championship standings is Team Harford’s 90, which will once again be crewed by LRO’s off-road expert and Land Rover Experience East of England instructor Edd Cobley, co-driven by Allan Jackson. Cobley will be aiming for his fifth win of the championship, but chased hard by Race2Recovery’s Ben Gott and Stephanie Boddez.
Gott returns to rally action after a nasty accident on the Balkan Breslau rally, in which he was lucky to escape from his overturned and submerged Race2Recovery Wildcat after slipping off the road under braking and plunging into a river. He’ll once again be navigated by Belgian Boddez, who lost both legs to meningitis aged 17, and aiming for a fifth consecutive podium finish.
Championship newcomers Dave Johnson and Joseph Monaghan are joining the Defender Challenge action for the first time on the Cambrian event.
Edd Cobley has given Team Harford a 16-point lead in the championship, but if he fails to finish and Race2Recovery finishes well, it could be all to play for in Scotland for the final round at the Borders Hillrally in Dumfries, on November 22-23, with just six points separating Race2Recovery from Taft Motorsport.
