Kent: A pensioner was caught smuggling £56,550 in his underpants. John Maurice was stopped in his Range Rover at Dover in 2008 as he waited for a ferry to Belgium. He told customs officers he had only 780 euros cash - about £685 - but the lie was exposed when 'Izzy the sniffer dog' targeted his crotch.
Warned he faced a strip-search, Maurice told customs officers, 'That's a good dog you've got there.' He then took £62,000 in euros and £2,600 in sterling from his pants. Customs believe it is not the first time Maurice, of Barnstaple, Devon, has smuggled cash. Maurice has pleaded guilty to money-laundering and is due to be sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court this week.
Dorset: A Police dog savaged three sheep in Buckland Newton, Dorset recently; the three sheep died after being savaged by a police dog hunting armed robbers across farmland. Officers had been called after farmer Martin Perrett confronted four raiders wearing balaclavas. The gang shot at Mr Perrett's Range Rover before he rammed their getaway car off the road, forcing them to flee on foot. The dog picked up the robbers' scent but attacked the sheep as it gave chase in Buckland Newton, Dorset. Dorset Police, arrested four people over the raid, have said they will refund the farmer.
