Police hunt armed bank robber
Police are hunting an armed thief who robbed a bank in Victoria's south-east last week. Detectives said the balaclava-clad man entered a Bendigo Bank in Mirboo North and threatened staff with a gun and demanded cash. He then fled with a small amount of money across Ridgway Street, where he removed his balaclava. Police believe the man then drove north along the Strzelecki Highway, towards Morwell, in a silver Land Rover Discovery. Anyone with information can call Australian CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000
Men stranded in flood waters
Two young men drove a Land Rover Discovery into Deep Creek flood waters on East Deep Creek Road in Gympie, Queensland. Stranded in the middle of the crossing, the men climbed onto the roof of the vehicle as they and bystanders watched the Land Rover slowly sink beneath them. A local fire and rescue crew was dispatched to the scene. Fortunately, the water, at least 1.5 metres deep, was not flowing swiftly and the men were in no apparent danger, eventually jumping off the 4x4 and swimming to the western side of the road. A tow truck managed to winch the vehicle out.
Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace emphasised how important it was for motorists to take extreme care travelling on roads in flood-affected parts of the region. 'Don’t drive on roads covered with water,' he said, 'You never know what’s underneath. Some roads may have been washed away and others may be blocked by debris. Even motorists in 4x4s and high-clearance vehicles aren’t safe in extreme conditions.'
