South Africa Scam: South African Police seized eight luxury vehicles - including a Land Rover Discovery - during a sting operation involving stolen and cloned cars at Durban harbour. The vehicles were believed to have been shipped from the UK and were destined for neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Mozambique. The police said the cars were seized from containers which arrived in the harbour. Jakes van Zyl, of the Hawks' international vehicle crime investigating unit, said that 'Durban harbour was used as a gateway to ship the vehicles into the country.' He added that 'This has been an ongoing operation and so far we have seized ten cars which we believe had been stolen or cloned in the UK. When the vehicles get to South Africa, they are transported to neighbouring countries and sold to private individuals. Most of the sales are done online.' The operation, which included the Customs and Excise unit, started earlier this year and some cars that had been seized had been sent back to the UK for tests where the police have already made some arrests. It is believed to be the work of a crime syndicate and four other cars stolen in the UK were seized in Botswana earlier this year. The cars are not being sold in South Africa, but are transported through the country.
