Jaguar Land Rover, a business built around two great British car brands, has become the newest Partner of Formula Student, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) announced today. James Allison, Technical Director at Lotus Renault GP, will also join Formula Student as an Ambassador. Ross Brawn, Team Principal at MERCEDES GP PETRONAS F1 Team, will continue to serve as the competition’s Patron.
This year’s event, to be held at Silverstone on 14-17 July, is set to be the biggest and most international yet, with 132 teams from 31 countries including India, Nigeria, Thailand and even a Palestinian team taking part. Formula Student 2011 will also feature the highest number of green, low carbon cars taking part in its groundbreaking Class 1A category, which judges cars on their emissions levels and sustainability as much as their design and speed. 16 Class 1A cars will race in July, 13 of which will be electric. Last year Jaguar launched its first fully electric concept supercar, the C-X75, capable of speeds of over 200mph with just 29g/km of CO2 emissions. Formula Student is run by the IMechE and is Europe’s biggest student motorsport event. Now in its 14th year, student teams from universities across the world are challenged to design and build a car before finally competing against each other at Silverstone on 14-17 July. Restrictions are placed on the car frame and engine so the students’ knowledge, creativity, and imagination are tested. Josè Lopes, Head of Technical Excellence at Jaguar Land Rover, said, 'Formula Student acts as one of the best recruiting grounds in Europe. We know that the students taking part will have the knowledge, experience and passion we expect in our graduate trainees, so this partnership really is the perfect fit.'
James Allison, Technical Director at Lotus Renault GP, said, 'We are fortunate at Lotus Renault GP to have many talented graduate applicants for vacancies in our team. We have found from repeated positive experience that young engineers blooded in the engineering and competitive ethic of Formula Student stand out from the crowd. It is not just that they have demonstrated a laudable enthusiasm for teamwork, racing and engineering innovation by their commitment to their student team; it is our experience that the engineering opportunity afforded to Formula Student alumni allows them to shine with respect to their peers long after they have taken on full time work.'
Jon Hilton, Chairman of Formula Student, said, 'We’re delighted to have Jaguar Land Rover and James on board for this year’s Formula Student, which is gearing up to be the best yet. Without the energy and commitment of our ambassadors and sponsors the competition simply wouldn’t be what it is today.'
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) was established in 1847 and has some of the world’s greatest engineers in its history books. It currently has around 90,000 members in 120 countries representing mechanical engineers involved in a diversity of fields such as the automotive, rail, aerospace, medical, power and construction industries to name a few.
