The Treadlightly Trust pilot project was the byway west out of Rhayader. Powys CC repaired it and The Treadlightly Trust waymarked it. Since then 95% has stayed in great condition but in two places some idiots have been playing off piste.
Duncan Green, Chairman of The Treadlightly Trust said, 'This off piste damage is a real disappointment. It has been done on a high profile route. Somebody out there knows who has done this. This route is a fantastic drive, over 4km, but it will be closed if this continues. It has taken many years of work to persuade the Highway Authority to repair the byway and drain the boggy area rather than TRO the route.'
He added, 'The route was waymarked by volunteers from end to end. The Police have visited the site. We have worked with the Police to set up reporting protocols and define what is needed to prosecute. Yet some idiots continue to leave the hard stone track and play in the soft areas.'
We know that all over the country there are pay and play sites for thse who want to play in mudholes and, echoing what all reasonable greenlaners will be thinking, Green asks, 'What chance have we got of keeping these routes open when this happens? Don't these people know that several powerful environmental organisations use pictures like this to press for permanent TROs? Are they ignorant, stupid or what?'
Sadly this is not the only example of such vandalism, in fact criminal damage. Unless the responsible majority are prepared to educate the idiot fringe and when necessary shop them, the future of routes like this remain in the balance.
