Stuart McCluskie, owner of a Searle Safari Sleeper Mark I has started a new website devoted to the 88 inch Carawagons. He says, 'I started this site primarily to record other 88 inch Carawagons as they seem to have been overlooked by most, dwarfed by their bigger 109in brothers.'
88 inch Carawagons are SWB Land Rovers that have been converted by RJ Searle of Sunbury on Thames, that later became Carawagon International. The company started out as a boat builder, then moved into campervan conversions with the growing popularity of campervans in a post-war Britain. It wasn't just Land Rovers that they converted, they converted many more vehicles including Bedford Vans and Range Rovers. Searle did not just stop at converting vehicles into campervans, they also converted standard vehicles into more upmarket versions of themselves, giving them a touch of luxury as and where needed. Rovers, Land Rovers and Range Rovers to name just a few vehicles got the Searle special treatment
McCluskie generously added, 'Since John Carroll's Abersoch Express project in LRO magazine people are more aware of what they have and more and more 88 inch Carawagons are being recognised for what they are.'
As at 12 September, on the register there are nine Searle Safaris (MKI, MKII & MKIII variants), one Mini Carawagon, two Semi Station Wagons and four about which details are unknown. The fledgling website has sections that include notes on 88inch Carawagon recognition, useful links, and the register itself.
