American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. (AAM) is now manufacturing and assembling transfer cases for the Land Rover Defender. AAM and Jaguar Land Rover collaborated on the manufacturing of the proven design of the transfer case that is featured in the iconic Land Rover Defender. Start of regular production began in August at AAM's Glasgow Manufacturing Facility in Scotstoun, Glasgow, Scotland. 2013 model year Defenders are equipped with the GFT MT 82 six-speed gearbox and two-speed transfer box which offers an excellent ratio spread, high top gear for cruising and enhanced low-speed crawl capability. The lower first gear offers low crawl speed making towing on-road and off-road much easier. The low-down engine torque also helps in-gear acceleration and the tall sixth gear ensures excellent real-world cruising, refinement and fuel economy. Ground gears in both the gearbox and transfer box help contribute to the refinement of the transmission.
'AAM is pleased to launch our relationship with Jaguar Land Rover in Europe, supporting its vehicle program requirements with our global engineering and manufacturing expertise,' confirmed AAM President Europe, Steven J. Proctor. 'By taking a premium 4x4 light vehicle product and manufacturing it in our Glasgow, Scotland facility, AAM is bringing new jobs to the region and further diversifying our business.'
AAM, which is publicly traded as AXL on the NYSE, is a world leader in the manufacture, engineering, design systems integration and validation of driveline and drivetrain systems and related components and modules, chassis systems and metal-formed products for light trucks, sport utility vehicles, passenger cars and crossover vehicles and commercial vehicles.
