In January this year, LRO reported that Jimmy Savile's Carawagon was to be auctioned. At the time it was suggested that it might fetch up to £30,000 but it failed to find a buyer. Since then Savile has been exposed as a predatory paedophile and police are investigating a growing catalogue of complaints against him. Unsurprisingly it has been suggested that he may have used the Range Rover Carawagon camper to lure under-age girls for sex.
In 1978 Savile ordered the the Range Rover Carawagon complete with sink, double bed and curtains to be used for his charity work. It had seven owners after he got rid of it in 1983 – but the logbook reveals that it was registered to a house he owned near Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire. John Tomlin, an Auction Negotiator at Historics at Brooklands said, prior to the January auction, 'Jimmy Savile ordered the car new in 1978. It's a special build by Carawagon. It has a bed in the back and a basin between the seats so that it could double up as somewhere to sleep whilst he was on the road doing his charity work. We have the original log book with Sir Jimmy's name in it. It's not had that many owners. I don't know how long he had it for though, that's what we are hoping to find out. Either way I'm sure the car holds a lot of memories about Jimmy's time on the road. It came to us from another collector and it's due to go to auction.'
Following the shocking revelations the converted Range Rover has been hidden away as attempts to sell it have been scuppered by the scandal surrounding the sleazy DJ. The dealer trying to sell the Range Rover on behalf of a client said the sale had sparked a hate campaign. It had put the Range Rover up for sale again just before the TV documentary that exposed Savile. The company has been forced to withdraw the vehicle from their website and hide the car because of the abuse it has received in emails and telephone calls.
Adverts for it have been taken off websites and it's likely that they will just rip the bed and sink out, refit seats and change the registration number to get rid of the rarity that has become a millstone.
