The expedition set off on Friday from the Land Rover Experience Centre in Asheville, North Carolina, in three 5-litre V8 Discovery 4s (known in North America as LR4s). They are following the Trans-America Trail, a route drawn up by motorcycle enthusiast Sam Correro and comprising mostly dirt and gravel tracks. Heading west, they will negotiate mountain tracks in Colorado and cross two mountain ranges in Utah, before finishing in Oregon.
Certified Land Rover Driving Instructor Tom Collins is leading the way. After competing in the 1987 Camel Trophy, Collins created the Great Divide Expedition of 1989 (an overland trip across Colorado’s continental divide in Range Rover Classics) and went on to establish driving schools and adventure programs in the USA.
Land Rover Expedition America will not be televised but the team will share their stories as they happen, through a range of social media channels. You can follow the journey at #LRExpeditionAmerica on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
