LRO columnist Jerry Thurston started his feature like this:
'You hear the Defender 110 V8 rumbling down the perimeter road long before you see the matt grey Land Rover. Then it hoves into view, with a flash from the sun hitting the flat windscreen as it turns on to the straight, heading towards us. There’s about a quarter of a mile before the U-shaped turn that takes you on to the main runway at Bruntingthorpe proving ground. And test driver Matt isn’t wasting an inch of it.
'The lazy throb of the 6.2-litre Chevrolet motor is deceptive. It takes a few seconds before I realise that he’s going quickly – too quickly, in fact. It’s one of those nightmare moments when inwardly I’m screaming: ‘Brake! Use the #@*£$% brakes!’ But no words come out.
'The nose dips for a couple of seconds. Matt’s finally used the anchors but surely it’s too late and not for long enough… and he turns in. The inevitable happens: the back of the 110 starts to come around, accompanied by a soundtrack of tortured rubber.
'The back continues to slew and I wait for the barrel-roll that’s sure to come. Then in a moment of crystal clarity I can see through the side window. Matt is smiling – all this is entirely deliberate, and he’s still hard on the throttle. A twitch more opposite lock and the back end slots neatly into line. Then he’s off down the main runway looking for more. What the hell?
'Five hundred and twenty brake-horsepower. Savour it; roll it around your mouth as if supping a glass of fine brandy. Five hundred and twenty brake-horsepower, in a Land-Rover… This is the latest, and fastest, creation from Twisted. And today it’s our turn to take the wheel.'
Now take a look at the footage, turn the sound up, and enjoy!
