Peter and Eileen Crichton’s superb overland journey from Cape Wrath in Scotland to Cape Clear in the Republic of Ireland was definitely among my favourite reads this year. They have a no-frills, self-sufficient approach to travelling in their veteran overlanding Discovery, coupled with an inspiring determination to find new places. And they take stunning photos too!
The journey has been covered in the latest three editions of LRO, culminating in the current issue, February 2014.
Here's a snapshot of their adventure...
'Crossing the Kyle was a fairly terrifying experience with Rabia balanced on a modest float. An especially sharp and sudden tidal swell surged in from the Atlantic as we left the jetty, and our rig pitched alarmingly on the Kyle’s churning waters. We crossed the boggy wilderness to the Cape lighthouse to start our journey, but there was no way south from this headland. So after exploring the Cape’s rugged coastline on derelict Ministry of Defence tracks we made a less challenging return crossing. Before moving on we took time to discover the beaches and cliffs near Durness. We were astonished to find legal access to our first beach drive here, enjoying the low-tide amble round the magnificent bay.'
