No, that’s not an April Fool… Chancellor George Osborne announced the reinstatement of a rolling tax exemption for older vehicles in his 2014 Budget today.
It’s great news for classic Land Rover owners, who’ve been denied a rolling exemption since the 25-year ruling was canned in 1997.
Date of manufacture is what counts, so you may find a Land Rover or Range Rover registered after January 1, 1974 is tax-exempt. If in doubt, check your vehicle’s build date with the BMIHT’s records (heritage-motor-centre.co.uk).
Other changes to road tax, from October 1, 2014, include the ability to pay monthly. And, you won’t be able to transfer a tax disc to a new owner when you sell your vehicle – you’ll get a refund on the months remaining, but the buyer will have to ensure they tax it.
