The first Discovery birthday party was held in 2009 when a group of owners met on the Hoe to celebrate the vehicle’s twentieth birthday. For the twenty first birthday in October 2010 it was decided to re-enact the 1989 press launch and follow the same two day itinerary, this year the aim is to make it the biggest and best birthday bash to date.
Event co-organiser Tim Newcomb informs us:
‘We currently have 9 of the original GWACs and a 5-door pre-production prototype joining us, our aim being to get as many GWACs as possible to attend.
‘It has been arranged for a photo shoot at City Bus Depot (used in the Launch in 1989)
‘The Weekend is going to be centred around Mt. Edgcumbe Estate. Camping is available Friday PM until Sunday PM. The price is £15 per unit. i.e. caravan, tent, camper van or roof tent etc.
‘We need to know how many people are camping so please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you plan to attend.
‘Portable toilets will be on site. There will be a central marquee with a bar and food available and we hope a band will join us for the Saturday evening social.
‘Land Rover will be bringing the first ever production Discovery and the one-millionth. There will also be a D4 with an Instructor from LR Experience, Southwest joining the event.’
The revised itinerary:
Friday: A green lane / scenic drive trip has been planned with the hope of visiting locations on Dartmoor depending on conditions at the time.
Saturday: Participants will meet on Plymouth Hoe for the usual photo shoot and catch up. They will be staying on the Hoe for a bit longer this year until about 14:30, the reason for this is currently being kept secret but will become apparent on the day.
They will leave the Hoe and make their way to Mount Edgcumbe, via the Torpoint Ferry. Where the intention is to do a lap through Plymouth City centre with the GWACs and anyone else that would like to join them.
Then camping on the Mount Edgcumbe Estate.
Sunday: There will be more scenic drives and laning as required.
