‘With all this space and height, we’ve got room to fill the building with overland equipment,’ says Maidenhead Sales Manager Andrew Arkley, as he showed LRO around the what is soon to become a new ‘4x4 lifestyle showroom’, occupying the spacious main building. ‘In here we’ll have roof tents, trailers, vehicles, camping equipment, so people can clamber all over expedition-prepared Land Rovers and really get a feel for what it's all about.’
The transformation will take place over the next couple of months, during which time Nene is planning to add at least a couple of extra staff to the current Maidenhead team of six.
As well as the 4x4 lifestyle showroom, Nene’s Maidenhead branch is also offering parts, servicing and vehicle sales. Servicing is carried out by Land Rover-trained technicians in a four-ramp workshop on site (which might gain a fifth ramp in the future), and the hourly rate is £79.95 + VAT. For those needing extensive chassis repairs, replacement or major body refurbishment, Nene will transport clients’ vehicles up to Peterborough.
A Waxoyl rustproofing shop will also be added soon, in addition to the existing Waxoyl shop in Peterborough. ‘Our clients close to London and the southwest who are already delighted to know they’ll be able to get this great rustproofing service without the need to travel to Peterborough,’ says Nene boss Andrew Harrison-Smith.
Expect the Peterborough branch to remain the heartland for Nene’s Defender sales, with the Maidenhead branch stocking a bigger selection of Range Rovers, Discoverys and Freelanders. Nene’s bespoke Icon range will also be available to view in Maidenhead, while the conversions will continue to be carried out in Peterborough. Nevertheless, it’s good to see an original sign-written Series I on-site, a vehicle formerly owned by the grandfather of Nene boss Andrew Harrison-Smith.
‘We’re finding there's a real buzz in the air for Land Rovers at the moment,’ says Arkley, ‘especially with Defender production ending this year, so this a really fun time to be with the business. We’re thinking of having a big barbecue in the summer, and invite clubs and anyone interested in 4x4 driving - it’ll almost be like a big playground, and we think we can give the place a kind of 'Goodwood vibe'.’
