The technology, known as PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) features on Pirelli’s P Zero tyres, and uses a polyurethane foam or ‘sponge’ on the inside which absorbs vibrations and reduces the amount of noise that is transmitted through the wheels to the cabin.
Pirelli claims that the tyres, made in Carlisle, can reduce road noise inside the cabin by between two and three decibel, and the PNCS has no effect on the handling characteristics of the vehicle.
Although this is not the first tyre to make use of a sound deadening layer, this is the first time the technology has been developed specifically for an SUV.
Range Rover Sport models fitted with the 275/40 R22 108Y XL P version of the P Zero will receive the PNCS as original equipment. The tyres have the letters ‘PNCS’ on the sidewalls to denote its use.
