Back in October 2014, I received the following request from a Mr Danny Robinson… ‘Hi Russ. I’m a long term subscriber to LRO. Are there any members or clubs in Sicily? The reason I ask for your help is that my daughter, Jesi, is to be married there in Taormina in July 2015. Her one wish is to arrive at the church in a classic Range Rover or a Series Land Rover. Can you help in any way?’
The first port of call was Giuseppe Santino from the Land Rover Historic Register of Italy. The owner of a lovely Series IIA from his family’s Sicilian nut plantation, which we featured in LRO’s December 2013 issue. Giuseppe now lives in Northern Italy in the Emilia Romagna region, but I was sure he would know someone back home who could help.
To my surprise he replied with a firm ‘NO!’ No, he would not have anyone else conduct this honourable task, he would book a week’s holiday and drive down himself. Only a 1300 mile round trip, plus two ferry crossings.
Well, Friday 24 July was the big day, and yes the bride did make it to the church on time but her parents had an adventure along the way. You can read the full story in the October issue of LRO, in the shops on September 2.
