So you’re a brilliant parker and have mastered the dark art of reversing a horsebox into a tight space with relative ease – brilliant. But if you struggle or would frankly rather it was done for you and would like making a ten-minute job into a two-minute job, then Advanced Tow Assist is just what you’ve been waiting for.
Tow Assist isn’t new to Land Rover. From the Discovery 3 onwards Tow Assist would predict your path using trajectory lines that you would then follow. The new Advanced Tow Assist is an optional feature for the new Discovery 5 that uses semi-autonomous driving aids to help you park your trailer, caravan or horsebox easily and quickly – just watch the video demo from JLR.
So how does it work? First you select your type of trailer on the big 10in screen (there’s plenty of scope with general, car, goods, boats, caravan and horsebox options). Select single or twin axle then enter the dimensions of your trailer.
Starting with Disco 5 and trailer in a straight line, use the Terrain Response dial to select the space you want to park your trailer in using the trajectory lines shown on screen. If you’re misaligned then it will straighten you out and if you’re about to jackknife, an alarm will sound. The Advanced Tow Assist does the counter-steering (the difficult bit!) as you do the pedals. Easy.
The new Discovery isn’t out until Spring 2017 but for now watch below as the Discovery 5 seamlessly parks using Advanced Tow Assist.
