For several months there have been heated discussions in cyberspace about the validity of the ‘Official’ in the title of the Facebook community titled ‘The Official Freelander Owners Club.’
The current group admins had been lead to believe that the status was bestowed upon them via an e-mail from a senior director of JLR in the early formation of the group, which now has 1,458 members.
Newest recruit to the admin team, Vivien Blackmore, obtained a copy of the endorsement e-mail and was suspicious of the source. Her concerns were confirmed by a former committee member of an independent club who had been through the protracted process of attaining ‘Land Rover Approved’ status, who confirmed it to be a fake e-mail.
This has been a frustrating and embarrassing incident for the group, but to their credit they want to publicly highlight the error and put it behind them.
Group administrator, Mike Pitt, stated. ‘Following a recent query concerning our 'Official' group status, the Admin team have taken a lot of time and care, to revisit the 'endorsement email' that was received. Our newest admin, Viv, has great experience dealing with JLR, and has been looking at the documentation with a more professional 'eye', knowing what to look for, in JLR correspondence.
‘We have regrettably discovered to our frustration, and my personal embarrassment, (as I had always believed it genuine) that the declaration, is indeed, false.’
The club is now moving on with the new title of ‘Freelanders First’ and look forward to folk visiting their page and getting on with the original intent of ‘having fun in their Hippos’.
