Drew was the founder and managing director of Bowler Motorsport, the Derbyshire firm which made its name building innovative and race-winning Land Rover-based competition vehicles for the world’s most demanding off-road events, including the Dakar Rally.
Drew’s passion for off-road motorsport began in the early 1980s, trialling a home-built 86-inch Series I with the Peak and Dukeries Land Rover Club. Steadily improving it, he soon found success in off-road speed events and quickly began building similar vehicles for customers around the world.
The earliest Bowlers spawned a succession of race-winning vehicles for trials, comp-safaris, hill rallies and rally raids, such as the Tomcat, Wildcat, Nemesis, EXR and the groundbreaking Bulldog, which was launched earlier this year – all are shining examples of his genius.
Drew will be greatly missed but his contribution to raising the profile of off-road racing will never be forgotten – no-one has done more to bring rally raid to the UK. The thoughts of the LRO team are with his family and friends.
The thriving Belper-based company that Drew founded, bowlermotorsport.com, will continue his vision.
Bowler Motorsport's Defender Challenge crews are due to take part in the Scottish Borders Hillrally this weekend, for the final round of the 2016 championship.
