You might have seen Camel Trophy fans already treat their new Defenders to Sandglow Yellow-themed goodies, but the new Trophy Edition is Land Rover's first attempt to pay homage to the legendary competition series with the L663 Defender.
If the model name sounds familiar, you may recall the £195k Works Trophy V8 edition, a limited run of just 25 examples of the previous-generation Defender, announced earlier this year.
Inspired by that earlier edition, but far more attainable at $90k (£65k), the new Trophy Edition Defenders wear a unique black and yellow protective wrap, plus a range of accessories.
(In the UK the protective wrap is a £3775 extra, available in just three colours: Pangea Green, Gondwana Stone and Eiger Gray.)
Beneath the wrap is a 2022 model-year Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic SE. Not to be confused with the P400e (a 2.0-litre 4cyl plug-in hybrid petrol) the P400 is a six-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol drivetrain, generating a beefy 390bhp.
Only 220 examples will be built, each one equipped with an extensive package of off-road adventure equipment. This includes expedition roof rack, front underbody protection, deployable ladder, winch kit, mud flaps, integrated air compressor and loadspace rubber mats.
Similar to the Works Trophy V8 – which sold out in just three days – the L663 Trophy Edition comes with an experience package, in homage to the Camel Trophy. Customers receive an exclusive invitation to participate in the one-day ‘Land Rover U.S. Trophy Competition’ at Biltmore Estate in Asheville (starting from October 11, 2021), where on- and off-road challenges will test the two-person teams’ spirit and resolve. The winning crew will go on to compete at The Land Rover Trophy Competition at Eastnor Castle in England.
Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO of JLR North America, says: ‘The Defender Trophy Edition evokes the spirit of adventure with an array of off-road accessories and special features created for the ultimate Land Rover enthusiast. We’re looking forward to putting on a memorable adventure competition for our Defender Trophy Edition customers that will not only put these vehicles to the test but will also create a special shared experience honouring the rich heritage of the Land Rover brand.’
