‘Rabia’ is our 1992 Land Rover Discovery. She has a 3.5 V8i engine and she has supported all our global travels since 1995. Like a good bottle of wine, she has generally improved with age, but needs lots of TLC to maintain her as an excellent vintage product.
After 320,000 Km of earlier travels, the CD expedition will be her greatest challenge because of the repeated assents to high altitudes, sometimes in remote locations and on questionable tracks. This is not to be a journey up the Pan-American Highway!
Her bodywork is in excellent condition and her power unit still retains balanced cylinder compressions that equate to those of a new vehicle. The main challenge in our preparations was to check any non-metal components that may have suffered from the fatigue of 23 years of temperature cycling, stress and vibrations. In this respect, rubber, plastic and synthetic fibre components were our focus.
The big change for us in executing the journey is the way we navigate but that is not a vehicle-related matter. Rabia remains the same, unmodified standard Discovery apart from her 2 batteries.
