I like staying warm, but I don’t like thermal base layers because of their limited year-round usefulness.

Helly Hansen’s Lifa clothing isn’t sold as a thermal layer but can be used like one, keeping you warmer in colder weather, or as a lightweight base layer.

I bought a couple of sets for the G4 Challenge UK selections in 2008 when temperatures hovered around freezing; and they’ve proved to be just as useful since.

Their main strength is in keeping you comfortable so, if you get wet, the fabric will move the water around so you don’t end up with the horrible feeling of wet clothes clinging to you – and you’ll dry out quicker.

They also make great nightwear for year-round camping!

Verdict: Miles more versatile than thermal underwear.
