What’s the story?
Toby Darwin couldn’t weld, had little mechanical experience and didn’t even own a Land Rover, but that didn’t stop him rebuilding this Series I.
Having purchased a Series I without even going to see it, Toby stripped and rebuilt the non-running Land Rover after having it delivered to his home. Through snow, rain and all weather conditions, Toby worked on the Series I as it sat on his driveway. Spending two years rebuilding his Series I, Toby now has a unique daily-driver to be proud of.
Our favourite bit?
Toby bought this Series I on eBay in a fit of New Year’s Eve enthusiasm. He didn’t even look at it, just paid the money and had ‘Nelly’ delivered. But thanks to online advice, some local help and Toby’s own boundless enthusiasm, Nelly is now back on the road.
And the verdict from LRO writer Peter Galilee?
This 109 is a real hoot. Yes, lots of things aren’t ‘correct’, but rivet-counting can be a sterile experience. On the other hand, adaption and ingenuity allow for creativity – that’s what we’ve got here. It may be rough around the edges, but it’s up and running. Welcome back, Nelly!
