What’s the Story?
This awesome machine belongs to Brian Lallaway and his company, Landscope, based near Cumbernauld. Initially, the company looked after domestic lawns and hedges then commercial property. That kind of work obviously tails off in winter, but Brian’s customers began asking him to clear away snow and grit their paths. Bing in the Land Rover…
‘In 2010 we got the 2003 Td5 Defender 110, the old one with a small towbar-mounted hopper on the back – but the small hopper was running out too quickly. Something bigger was needed’ recalls Brian. Until a few years ago, the Td5 carried the plough now fitted to the 130. That got Brian thinking.
After placing an order for a brand-new 130 chassis cab in November 2013, Brian and Tony took the plough along to Cuthbertson Ltd in Biggar to have it overhauled and the mountings modified to suit the front of a TDCi Defender.
It can carry 1.2 tonnes of salt when working on site, away from public roads. On-road, it carries one tonne of salt, to stay within the gross vehicle weight of the 130. The 300kg plough is raised and lowered hydraulically.
Our Favourite Bit?
Grit slides down the angled sides of the hopper on to a rubber belt driven by a hydraulic motor, delivering grit to the chute that feeds the spinner below. It can spread it up to 11 metres, delivering anything from 5-40 grammes per square metre. ‘Once we’ve set the control to deliver a set amount, sensors on the propshaft, spinner and rubber belt are automatically co-ordinated and controlled by the control box in the cab.’ The system then calculates how to achieve what it’s been set to do.
And the verdict from Mark Saville?
This remarkable machine is a testament not only to the engineering skill and ingenuity of the Cuthbertson and Lothian Vehicle Bodybuilders’ craftsmen and women who created the bespoke tipping chipper body, it also amply demonstrates just how versatile the Defender chassis cab can be.
