My 23-year old son, Terry, restored this classic Series III Land Rover while recovering from breaking his leg at work. I think he took pity on it because it was as broken as him... and he just went for it! He's always liked Land Rovers; ever since getting his provisional driving licence when he was 16, he's been trying to buy an old one. When he spotted this ute for sale, he talked me into driving 50-odd miles to pick it up for him on a car transporter.
He spent every day taking something off, cleaning it, restoring it and waiting to put it all back together. There was a never-ending stream of parts - from eBay and elsewhere - being delivered.
He rebuilt the engine, welded up the bulkhead, fitted stone guards and sprayed it. He customised and rewired the interior, It's an incredible car now; an absolute stunner. It took three months to do and the only thing that needs fixing is the starter motor. Fortunately, it starts easily enough using the crank handle.
In its first three months back on the road, it's won a lot of prizes at car shows in the British category. Terry's leg has also healed up well, but that took a lot longer than this rebuild.
